THE AIM OF TRANSFORMATION COUNSELLING

Transformation counselling aims to assist clients to explore difficult areas in their lives, to work through troublesome limitations and to achieve a more fulfilling quality of life.

Through my own process of transformation and witnessing the experience of many individuals in my work, I have come to realize that difficulties or simply "feeling stuck" can often reveal strengths and talents of which we are not aware.

In order to unveil these gifts we need to be open and willing to go through a process of transformation. A caterpillar closed in its safe and known but limiting form can only transmute into a beautiful free butterfly by going through a process of gradual but radical change of its being. Similarly we can only break free from our limitations, restrictions, burdens and pain if we are willing to experiment consciously with change.

This may challenge us, as we are influenced by the conditioning of our personal history and by cultural and philosophical beliefs.

Many of us go through changes that we experience as unsettling. When we learn to embrace with compassion the part of us that fears change, we can begin to recognize the opportunity offered and work with it constructively.

HOW I WORK

Every person, couple or group that comes to me for counselling has different needs and aims, and unique qualities, so I work with each client differently. However, the following steps generally apply:

  1. Acknowledging and facing the difficulties and limitations, exploring the areas you want to change.
  2. Setting goals, looking at dreams, visions, ambitions and desires. How would you like your life to be?
  3. Identifying inner and outer resources and learning how to use them effectively to realise your goals.
  4. Starting to make changes, take risks and learn from mistakes, with support and nurturing always integral to the process.
  5. Building up a strong support system, so that when counselling comes to an end you can move on, sustained by a reliable network of help and resources.

Respect for the client’s individuality is of paramount importance at all times. I also regard empathy, confidentiality, safety and genuineness as essential ingredients in the counselling process.
